Introducing: The Museum of Urban Life

Located in the graffiti-filled Creative Clubhouse in Edmonton, the Museum of Urban Life was founded by local creatives searching for a setting to explore art as a communal practice. The project offers a curated, artist-created space where the public and Edmonton’s creatives interact with art and each other. It is an open platform for creativity, innovation, reflection, cultural evolution and self development in order to interrogate current ways of living and dream of new possibilities and methods to shape our future lives in Edmonton.

The creative drive in the air at MOUL’s introductory meeting on March 15, 2013 was infectious. I was lucky enough to have a camera on hand; when the inspiration hit, I knew it had to be recorded. The night had a group of 15 or so local creatives rolling up their sleeves and collaborating on projects improvised on the spot, including live music, graffiti art, a stop motion animation, illustration art, and an ever-approachable Lego building session.

Walking away from the Clubhouse that evening, there was enough inspiration pumping through our veins to keep us awake on the graveled,  icy Edmonton streets. We all had a mind full to the brim with ideas and a room full of new acquaintances with whom future collaborations would surely ensue. This is the birth of a new culture of creation and community in Edmonton, set in an urban landscape.

The music and artwork featured in the video was improvised and recorded at the MOUL introductory meeting.
